AFEA@ASSA CALL FOR PAPERS

January 3–5, 2027 (Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday)

The African Finance and Economics Association (AFEA) is excited to announce that the AFEA-AEA-Allied Social Science Association (ASSA) 2027 Conference call for papers is now open. The meeting will be held from January 3–5, 2027 (Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday), at the Washington DC – Marriott Marquis. AFEA plans to sponsor three sessions and a fourth session, in collaboration with the National Economic Association (NEA). During this annual event, AFEA hosts its Annual Business Meeting, Conversation Series, and the AFEA/AfDB luncheon.

AFEA invites relevant and high-quality papers covering a wide array of Africa’s economy, including finance, health, education, gender, employment, trade, the public sector, artificial intelligence, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, the environment, inequality, welfare, growth, inflation, poverty, uncertainty, geopolitics, and climate change.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND DATES 

For any proposal or full paper to be considered, the first page MUST provide the following:

  • A title of the proposal/paper.
  • A concise abstract of no more than 250 words summarizing the paper’s objective, methodology, (if empirical paper; data and sampling period), key preliminary results, and contribution to literature.
  • Primary & two secondary JEL classification codes that best describe the paper.
  • Contact information (especially emails) and affiliations of ALL contributing authors.
  • The submission form is available here.

Formatting should be Times New Roman in font size 12 and 1.5 spacing. The file must also be in MS Word. The Abstract submission deadline is April 15, 2026. Early submissions are highly encouraged. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by June 30, 2026, while the deadline for submitting the full paper is August 30, 2026.Conference attendees must also register with the ASSA to attend the ASSA annual meeting by paying the ASSA conference registration fees. All attendees of AFEA sessions are expected to pay the ASSA conference registration fees, which will entitle you to a name badge, a hotel discount, and use of the book exhibit. ASSA registration will open in late August 2026.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • Proposal acceptance does not guarantee presentation at the conference.
  • Only authors who submit full papers by August 30, 2026, will be scheduled for presentation.
  • All authors of accepted papers must serve as discussants at the conference.
  • Membership in AFEA is a precondition for paper submission and participation in all AFEA and AFEA/NEA sessions. Authors of accepted proposals MUST pay the AFEA membership fee online – AFEA Membership—AFRICAN FINANCE AND ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION (afea1.org) by June 15.
